Lenz's law states that an electromagnetic field interacting with a conductor will generate electrical current that induces a counter magnetic field that opposes the magnetic field generating the current.
Our apparatus is a very simple device to help students develop an understanding of the induction of eddy currents and Lenz's law.
It is made up of 2 metal hoops (one open and one closed), that are freely moving on a centrally pivoted pin.
The entire set up is mounted on a cast iron base.
The apparatus moves when a magnet passes through the closed loop and does not move when the loop is open, proving Lenz's law.
