The acrylic light guide demonstrator is used to demonstrate total internal reflection.
Students can apprehend how this phenomenon may be used to confine light within a guide or fibre, thus leading to an appreciation of the principles of optical communications and an understanding of its vast applications.
The light guide demonstrator comprises of a shallow S-shaped acrylic bar, whose dimensions are 220 x 20 x 20mm.
The lower surface of the bar is painted white to aid in the visibility of the path of the light rays.
If a light ray (from a light box or laser) is introduced into one end of this S-shaped acrylic bar, it can be seen to be reflected several times, from the internal surfaces of the bar, to emerge from the other end.
